I love the word "guy". So often he's certainly not a boy, but you can't really go with 'man'.

I made that exact distinction recently. I ran into someone I knew in high school but didn't recognize him. He was a guy back then, but now he's a man.

I think it has to do with the head. Generally speaking, I notice a man's face is wider than a guy's. Not necessarily fatter, just wider.

I too love the word 'guy', but only when used as a proper noun (e.g. - my name). :)

But seriously, using 'guy' as a generic in public sometimes gets those of us saddled with that name to turn around and say 'yes?'.

Beth, excellent observation. From now on I will whip out my protractor before giving anyone a label.
Guy, you must be flattered, however, when someone says, "What a guy!"

Just you wait 'til you describe your son as "guy" because you just can't get yourself to say "man" yet....
