Why don't teeth grow like hair and fingernails?

I wish we had to go every six months to get our teeth cut instead of cleaned.

Are you sure they dont grow? How come old people are called "a little long in the tooth"?

I think that's because gums recede, making the teeth appear longer. Welcome back! It's been awhile!

Yeah, gums recede, let me tell you about my 45 minute tooth cleaning routine. I'm thinking I'm too young for receding gums, but too old to just shrug and say who cares.

Actually, teeth do grow. They grow on the pulp side, and cause the neurovascular bundle to recede over a lifetime. Thats why old people have much less sensitivity than younger folks. Thats what a dental education will teach ya!
